2. Next-step Seminars

Next-step Seminars for those who are using/will be using Glaser's Grounded Theory are planned for:

Saturday 24 September 0500 GMT
Sydney 1600 EST, Auckland 1800 NZST
Saturday 24 September 1400 GMT
New York 1000EDT, San Francisco 0700PDT

Time not suitable? Let me know and I will try and schedule future seminars at a time more suitable for you. Or if you can get a group together, we could schedule a seminar specifically for you.

We adopt the model of the Grounded Theory Institute face to face seminars. There are two types of places for the online seminars: 'Practioner' and 'Observer'.

As a Practioner you will be an active participant in the seminar and our aim will be to move you one step forward on your Grounded Theory journey. There will be
  • a short introduction explaining the function of the seminar; then
  • we will each introduce ourselves; and then
  • focus on the study and the concerns of each Practitioner in turn.
We aim for a supportive atmosphere and so it won’t be necessary to prepare a formal presentation – we anticipate more of a relaxed chat about what’s going on for you right now in your study. We will have the ability to share digital documents and software applications so if you have started data collection, and would like to work with your own data, please select 1- 3 pages of field notes and/or memos which relate to the issue(s) you want addressed.  We anticipate spending 30 – 40 minutes on each Practioner.

As an Observer, we hope that you will learn by observing the troubleshooting of other Grounded Theory studies and you are welcome to ask questions.

The seminar fee for Practioners and Observers is normally £60 for students or £75 for faculty and the seminar will take up to 3 hours depending on numbers.

If you are interested in joining a seminar, please apply for a place by emailing me. I'd like to know:
  1. What is the area/focus of your research?
  2. Where are you in the Grounded Theory process?
  3. Have you identified your core category? If so please elaborate.
  4. What would you like help with/feedback on from the seminar?
  5. Which Grounded Theory books have you read?
  6. Are you using classic, Glaserian Grounded Theory?
  7. Do you have a headset with microphone? (it's helpful if you can, otherwise you will need to be able to mute your microphone when you are not speaking)
  8. Do you have a faster or slower internet connection.
I will be looking for a mix of types of studies and stages of research, so if you are unsuccessful in gaining a place it will be no reflection on your work.
